BRIEF SUMMARY

This website will teach you what French Santons are, and where they came from. French Santons are little clay figures that represent the nativity scene. They emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries in Italy but quickly spread to Provencal France. They began to make these small nativity scene figures, but they were ordinary village people like themselves. It became a family tradition to make santons and those who do make them are known as Santonniers, and the tradition is kept alive by some small towns in Provencal France, where Santon fairs are held every Christmas.
